What Subtitle Translation Involves
The Same Message in Less Space
Video subtitle translation asks the translator to recreate the message inside strict timing and character limits, rather than simply reproduce every word on screen.
Timing Changes the Translation
A line must arrive with the speech, break naturally, and stay visible long enough to read, all without pulling attention away from the video.
Some Languages Take Up More Room
German and Spanish often expand in translation, so the wording may be tightened to protect the meaning while keeping the subtitle readable and well timed.
Subtitle Translation Services We Offer
The precise subtitling services you’ll require will depend on the materials you already have and the final destination of the video. A project beginning with an SRT file will need a different workflow from one beginning with raw footage.
Translation of Existing Subtitle Files
For projects that begin with a source-language subtitle file, we translate directly into the existing SRT, VTT, or comparable format. Original timecodes stay in place unless the target language requires re-segmentation. We then review timing and line breaks, and complete the SRT translation in the same format the client originally supplied.
Transcription, Time-Coding, and Translation From Video
It’s also not a problem to start with the video alone. First, we’ll transcribe the audio, then create and spot the source-language subtitles against the video. Speaker labels and any important on-screen text can be included where needed. Once the time-coded file has been reviewed for timing and completeness, we’ll focus on the translation.
Multilingual Subtitles for One Video
A single video can be prepared for several markets from the same time-coded master. Each language is handled by a native translator, not passed through one general workflow. Glossaries and translation memory keep recurring terms aligned, while the multilingual subtitles are delivered separately, one clearly labeled package per language.
SDH and Accessibility Subtitles
Who is speaking? What sound has just happened off screen? SDH subtitles help Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers follow more than the dialogue by also showing who is speaking and flagging important sounds. We can produce them in the source language or translate them. Standard subtitles normally leave that extra audio detail out.

File Formats and Platform Requirements
The Platform Shapes the Format
Subtitle requirements vary between platforms and players, so we confirm where the content will be published before deciding how the finished files should be supplied.
Files In and Files Out
We accept videos, scripts, and existing subtitle files as source material. Final delivery may include SRT, VTT, STL, TTML, SCC, or burned-in subtitles.
Language-Safe File Delivery
We also check character encoding, helping accents and non-Latin scripts appear correctly. Our multilingual DTP team can handle related print or e-learning layouts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is subtitle translation, and how does it work?
Subtitle translation involves converting the spoken dialogue on a video into another language. The written subtitles remain faithful to what is said in the original but must also be short enough to be read time available and fit the space on screen.
Can you create subtitles if I only have the video?
Yes, Capital Linguists can start with only the video. We’ll first transcribe and timecode the content, adding in speaker identification when useful. We’ll then review the source subtitles and translate them into whatever languages you require.
What is the difference between subtitles, captions, and SDH?
Subtitles, captions, and SDH all serve slightly different purposes. Subtitles translate the dialogue and captions write out the speech in the same language. Meanwhile, SDH shows who is speaking and which sounds matter, supporting Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.
What subtitle file formats do you deliver?
We deliver subtitles in SRT and VTT formats and can also provide other file types depending on the requirements of your publishing platform. We can also render open subtitles permanently into the video when separate subtitle files are not supported.
What is the difference between subtitles and dubbing?
Subtitles show the translated dialogue on screen. Dubbing, meanwhile, replaces the original voices with recorded speech in the target language. With subtitles, you’ll still hear the audio in the source language, while dubbing replaces this completely.
