What Is Simultaneous Interpretation?

What it is

Used at any multilingual event, simultaneous interpretation is what allows everyone to follow the speaker or presenter at the same time, without slowing anything down. It enables fluency and pace, regardless of language preference.

It works like this: first, the interpreter listens to the speaker of the source language and delivers their rendition in the target language just a few seconds later (that’s why it’s called real-time interpretation).

The audience hears this interpretation through a headset on a dedicated language channel, and meanwhile the speaker continues with their lecture or presentation.

Consecutive interpretation works slightly differently. With this method, the speaker pauses at regular intervals, allowing the interpreter to deliver each section, usually aided by brief notes. This approach certainly has its place, particularly in smaller or more conversational settings, but it brings with it a change in pace and rhythm.

Simultaneous interpretation allows better flow. To maintain accuracy and prevent fatigue, interpreters work as a pair in an interpreter booth, switching every 20-30 minutes. This is known as booth rotation.

How Simultaneous Interpretation Works at a Conference

HOW IT WORKS
01

In a conference setting, simultaneous interpretation relies on more than the interpreters’ language skills. The booth, audio feed, stage view, and technical setup all need to work in harmony.

02

Typically, interpreters work from soundproof booths, which might be fully enclosed or tabletop. From here, they can hear the speaker through an interpreter console headset. If they cannot see the stage directly, a video feed helps them follow the speaker’s facial expressions, slides, and timing.

03

Each interpreter speaks into a microphone connected to the interpreter console. From there, a transmitter sends the interpreted audio to attendees across the room. Audience members use a pocket receiver, select their preferred language channel, and listen through a headset or earbud. For larger events, a 32-channel receiver can support multiple working languages at the same time.

04

Capital Linguists provides simultaneous interpretation equipment, including infrared systems and radio frequency options that transmit audio wirelessly across the conference space.

05

An audio technician arrives at least one hour before the event to connect the PA system, test the receivers, check each channel, and make sure the simultaneous interpretation services are ready before guests take their seats.

Simultaneous Interpretation Equipment

Not every event needs the same interpretation setup. A small site tour, a courtroom-style proceeding, and a multilingual summit all place different demands on the equipment.

For smaller events, a portable tour guide system may well be all that’s required. It provides a flexible option and it’s simple to scale and set up. Plus it comes with the advantage of being transportable: we can deliver them almost anywhere. This format includes the essentials: portable transmitters, receivers, microphones, and wireless headsets or earbuds for the audience.

For larger conferences, a stationary system usually makes more sense. This gives you a more robust interpretation setup, with soundproof booths, interpreter consoles, transmitters, mixers, headsets, and dedicated audio support to keep everything clear and consistent throughout the event.

Capital Linguists supplies portable and stationary systems, and our technicians take care of the practical side: delivery, setup, testing, and dismantling. The system can be kept simple for two working languages or scaled up for multilingual events with as many as 35.

01

Booths are available in two main formats: the fully enclosed booth, which is often preferred for high-profile events, and the tabletop booth, which is quicker to assemble in smaller venues (or where other logistics don’t allow for a full booth).

02

Microphones can also be tailored to match the event. Depending on the speaker’s preference and the room layout, we can provide tabletop, handheld, lavalier, and gooseneck microphones. Digi-Wave and SM interpretation equipment can be added where the event calls for it.

Relay Interpreting for Multilingual Events

If your event has several working languages, relay interpreting can make the setup much more practical. Rather than sourcing interpreters for every possible language pair, the team uses a control language, often English, as the shared route between booths.

Let’s look at an example of what that could look like in reality:

A speech delivered in French, for instance, needs to be conveyed to Japanese participants at a conference, but there is no French-Japanese interpreter available. So, the original French message may initially be interpreted into English by a French-English interpreter. Next, an English-Japanese interpreter listens to that English version and renders it into Japanese. The Japanese speakers in the audience only hear the Japanese interpretation in their headsets as the relay chain all happens behind the scenes.

Capital Linguists plans relay interpreting in advance, including the relay chain, pivot interpreter, language teams, subject matter expertise, and timing, so multilingual events stay clear and coordinated.

Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI)

Capital Linguists also provides RSI for any virtual conference or hybrid event where speakers and attendees are joining from different locations.

RSI allows interpreters to work remotely and deliver their rendition via a video platform such as Zoom. Participants simply select their preferred language channel, and the speaker connects to the channel that matches their language.

This method means the interpreter can work from anywhere and often allows us to set up interpretation quickly, since it reduces travel and logistical constraints. It also means international events or virtual conferences are much easier to coordinate.

Just as with in-person simultaneous interpretation, Capital Linguists checks that the required systems are all fully operational. We also arrange a test session with interpreters a few days in advance, so audio, channels, and permissions are working before the live event begins.

Our Interpreter Credentials and Quality Standards Our Interpreter Credentials and Quality Standards

Credentials

Capital Linguists builds every simultaneous interpretation assignment around the right language team, not just the nearest available interpreter. Our ISO 9001 and ISO 17100 certifications support quality control, risk management, and interpreter vetting across 200+ languages.

Interpreters work at native-level fluency or near-native level in all working languages, with selection based on language pair, sector, event format, and subject matter.

Our interpreter network draws on professionals from academia, government language services, and graduate-level interpreting programs. It also includes linguists with memberships or certifications from organizations such as AIIC, NAJIT, ATA, CCHI, and NBCMI.

Before any event begins, interpreters sign a strict NDA to protect sensitive information. Clients also receive a dedicated project manager, who coordinates the interpreter team, equipment setup, schedule, test sessions, and timelines so nothing is left floating between vendors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What is simultaneous interpretation?

Simultaneous interpretation is a kind of interpreting that happens almost instantaneously. There are no awkward pauses or delays. Instead, skilled interpreters work as a pair to listen and interpret the message into the target language so that the attendees listening through headsets can understand what’s been said almost immediately.

The main difference is pace. Simultaneous interpretation happens with just a few seconds’ delay, while consecutive interpretation follows more of a turn-taking pattern. It works well where the interpreter forms relationships with the participants, usually in a more conversational setting or an interview. Simultaneous, meanwhile, is commonly used at much larger events.

Booking earlier is always better, especially for large or multilingual events. It gives time to find and confirm the interpreting teams, arrange equipment, and any technical checks or travel. However, at Capital Linguists we are also used to helping clients who are working to tight deadlines. Feel free to get in touch and we can assess availability and provide a quote as quickly as possible.

Absolutely! Capital Linguists provides RSI for many online and hybrid events, from webinars to virtual conferences, along with meetings that involve speakers in different locations and time zones. Interpreters work remotely through the chosen platform, while participants select the language channel they need. The setup is checked before the event to minimize the chance of technical hiccups.

Capital Linguists supplies top-of-the-range portable and stationary interpretation systems. Depending on the event, this may include fully enclosed booths, tabletop booths, interpreter consoles, receivers, transmitters, headsets, microphones, or portable tour guide systems. Our technicians also manage setup, testing, and dismantling following the event.
