A common example is the term ZIP code, used throughout the USA. If an American company were to launch in the United Kingdom, it might be tempting to leave the site the same – after all, it’s still an English-speaking country. Leaving “ZIP code,” however, would make the site feel less tailored to its audience, who would expect to see “postcode” instead.
Localization rather than transcreation would be the preferred choice for this kind of project, where rewording and adapting the details would be enough to make the content feel natural and locally appropriate.
In practice, localization is usually the right choice for website copy and software because these are highly practical forms of content. Users are not reading them for style or atmosphere.
