Interesting Facts About the Q'eqchi' Language
Q’eqchi’ is a Mayan language primarily spoken in Guatemala and Belize. There are also some populations in parts of Mexico, Honduras, and Kingston, New York. It belongs to the group of 22 officially recognized Mayan languages used in Guatemala, among the roughly 30 Mayan languages still in use today.
Five Interesting Facts about Q’eqchi’:
- Although today, the majority of Q’eqchi’ speakers live in the Guatemalan highlands, this population originally came from central Mexico. Having migrated to the highlands, they cultivated corn and other crops, such as cacao and black beans.
- In contrast to many other languages, Q’eqchi’ pronouns are inherently neutral, regardless of the subject’s gender. This lack of gender-specific pronouns like “he” or “she” reflects a cultural emphasis on community over individual identity among the Q’eqchi’ people. This is a common feature of many Maya languages.
- Q’eqchi’ is closely related to another Mayan language, K’iche’ (also known as Quiché). Some words are identical (such as saq, meaning “white”). Meanwhile, various other words share a common root word, even though today, they may bear little resemblance. For instance, in Q’eqchi’, the word for water is ab’. In K’iche’, it’s ja’. However, both these terms come from the Proto-Mayan root word, ha’.
- The Spanish colonization led to several changes in Q’eqchi’, particularly in its vocabulary, where words like escuela (school) have been adapted as eskela in the Q’eqchi’ language.
- There are estimated to be a little over 800,000 Q’eqchi’ speakers, making this intriguing language one of the most widely spoken Mayan languages in the world today.
