Spoken by more than 3 million people, Malinke (or Maninka) is widely heard across West Africa, and in particular in Guinea, where it is prominent in the Haute-Guinée region and neighbouring areas. It holds the status of a national language, and its cultural influence extends far beyond everyday conversation, playing a central role in music, oral storytelling, and cross-border communication throughout West Africa.

Five Fascinating Facts about Malinke:
1. Did you know that there are two common, though quite different, spellings of this language? Malinke is the French-based spelling, which is also most commonly used when referring to this language in English. However, Maninka is also used, most commonly by speakers of the language themselves in academic linguistics.

2. The Republic of Guinea has over 40 languages in widespread use. While French is the only official language, many indigenous languages (including Malinke) have national language status.

3. Like many of Guinea’s other languages (including Susu), and many languages from the same Mande language family, Malinke is tonal. It uses four tones, which are: high, low, rising, and falling. This means that by altering the pitch used to pronounce a given word, you can completely change its meaning.

4. Unlike English (and other European languages), Malinke uses postpositions (like Japanese) instead of prepositions. This means the small word that explains the position of an object comes after the noun, rather than before it.

5. Although primarily spoken in Guinea, there are also significant Malinke-speaking communities in Mali, Senegal, The Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso, along with smaller groups in Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
