Interesting Facts About the Susu Language
With around 2 million speakers, Susu is minority language, mostly spoken in Guinea, particularly in coastal regions, and the area around the capital, Conakry. It’s one of the country’s national languages and is spoken by over 20% of the population.
Five Fascinating Facts about the Susu language:
1. Susu is a Mande language. These West African languages stem from the larger Niger-Congo language family, many of which are tonal in nature. Susu is no exception and has two tones, which are high tone and low tone.
2. Unlike most European languages, Susu does not have definite or indefinite articles (like “the” or “a” in English).
3. Susu is a language which goes by many names. In fact, you’ll also hear it referred to as Sosoxui, Soussou, and Soso.
4. Susu is a highly melodic, musical language and this musicality means artists have often used it for creative purposes. Its rhythmic nature makes it perfect for lyrics, whether in religious songs or for pop music.
5. Susu was traditionally an oral language, which wasn’t written down. Today, however, it is most often written down using the Latin script. In Guinea’s post-independence era, it was written down using the N’Ko script, which was created in 1949 by Solomana Kante, a prominent Guinean writer and educator.
