Interesting Facts About the Shona Language
Shona is widely used in Zimbabwe in both spoken and written communication, but its standard form has an interesting history. Rather than developing from a single regional variety, Standard Shona was shaped by efforts to create a common writing system for several closely related forms of the language. Regional pronunciation and vocabulary nevertheless remain part of everyday Shona.
Five Interesting Facts About Shona:
Shona is one of Zimbabwe’s officially recognized languages and the country’s Constitution names it alongside languages including English, Ndebele, Tonga and Venda.
Shona has a particularly rich tradition of ideophones, which are highly expressive words that help a listener picture an action, sound or state. They have sometimes been described as words that effectively “show” rather than simply tell.
Shona is much more than a language used informally at home. It has an established literary tradition and is also used in education and wider communication, giving it an important role across Zimbabwean public and cultural life.
The Standard Shona used today did not simply develop from one regional variety. What actually happened dates back to 1931, when the linguist Clement Doke produced a pioneering report that aimed to create a unified orthography for the main dialect clusters. His work had a lasting influence on the way written Standard Shona was developed.
As well as written Standard Shona, the oral tradition plays a pivotal role in the way this language is communicated. Folktales (ngano), proverbs (zvirevo) and praise poetry (nhetembo) have long been used to pass on history, values and social knowledge from one generation to the next.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Shona translator or a Shona interpreter?
Do I need to decide which regional variety of Shona I need when choosing a translator or interpreter?
Not always, although it can be useful. Standard Shona provides a widely understood written form, but spoken Shona includes regional varieties such as Zezuru, Karanga, Manyika and Korekore. For projects aimed at a particular community, knowing where the audience is based can help us select the most appropriate linguist.
Do your Shona translators and interpreters have specialist experience?
Capital Linguists works with language professionals who have at least five years of experience. For assignments involving specialist terminology or sensitive subject matter, we also consider the linguist’s background and relevant sector experience when allocating the project.
