Five Interesting Facts About Poqomam:

1. The language has its own online talking dictionary! Swarthmore’s Talking Dictionaries project includes a Poqomam dictionary, where users can search Poqomam and English headwords and hear pronunciation recordings.
2. The Guatemalan Academy of Mayan Languages has a Poqomam language community office. ALMG lists Poqomam contact points in Palín, Escuintla and San Pedro Pinula, Jalapa. This is a reflection of the fact that, while Poqomam is a spoken community language, it is also part of more formal language-planning and cultural work in the country.
3. Poqomam has some quite complex pronunciation rules. For example, the consonants k, p, q, and t sound quite different depending on whether they appear at the end of a word or come before another consonant. In certain positions, they may be pronounced with a little extra “burst.”
4. One of the best-known places with large numbers of Poqomam speakers is Palín. Just 40km away from Guatemala City, Palín serves as a good reminder that Poqomam is not “just” a language of the remote highlands and that some communities are much closer to major urban centers.
5. Poqomam has published grammar resources, including Rukorb’aal Poqom Q’orb’al: Gramática Poqom (Poqomam), by José Francisco Santos Nicolás and José Gonzalo Benito Pérez. That matters because it shows Poqomam is not just documented informally. It has also been the subject of serious linguistic description and standardization work.

About the Poqomam Language

Poqomam is a Mayan language used in certain parts of Guatemala. Rather than being a language that belongs to one large, continuous area, Poqomam is found in various communities across the country, including in parts of Jalapa, Escuintla, and in certain parts of Guatemala City. As well as “Poqomam”, you might also see the language referred to as “Pocomam” or “Pokomam”.

There is little consensus on precise speaker numbers, however, the most recent estimates suggest there may be somewhere between 11,000 and 17,000. Although there is a much larger total Poqomam ethnic population, many – especially younger members – do not actually speak the language.

Speakers may bring different local vocabulary, Spanish-language experience, or educational backgrounds to an interpreting or translation assignment. It’s important to understand these details so that the final service feels more accurate and relevant to the speakers involved.
