Nuer is a tonal language, like the fellow East African language Dinka. However, Nuer’s tonal system is even more complex. Simply altering the pitch or tone of the way a word is pronounced can drastically change the meaning.
Here are some more unusual facts about Nuer:
It is primarily spoken in South Sudan and Ethiopia, with communities in the United States and Australia.
For Nuer people, cattle are highly important. As pastoralists, their cattle serve as companions. There are many words in the Nuer language relating directly to cattle.
In Nuer, verbs are used to distinguish between person, number, voice, mode and tense.
