Ma’di Interpreting & Translation Services

— WHY DETAILS MATTER

Ma’di language support is often needed at moments where people cannot afford to misunderstand each other. It may be a patient trying to explain what is wrong, a parent speaking with a school, or an organization preparing information for a Ma’di-speaking audience.

At Capital Linguists, we do not treat every request in the same way. A short phone call needs a different approach from a legal document or a community notice. We look at the setting, the people involved, and the type of communication needed before recommending the right Ma’di service.

We are an ISO 9001- and ISO 17100-certified translation agency, with the background, skills, and experience to support clients with Ma’di language services across all sectors.

Our goal is simple: accurate, reliable Ma’di language support delivered with professionalism from start to finish.

Five Interesting Facts About Ma’di:

1. Ma’di sits in a very multilingual neighborhood. Many Ma’di speakers are bilingual or multilingual. In Uganda, educated speakers may also use English and Swahili; in South Sudan, English, Arabic and Juba Arabic may also be part of the linguistic picture.
2. Ma’di is tonal. It has three level tones — high, mid and low — so pitch can be part of meaning, not just expression. That is the kind of detail that makes pronunciation much more important than it might look on the page.
3. Some Ma’di grammar can be carried by “floating tones.” In other words, certain grammatical meanings may be expressed through tone rather than through a separate visible word or ending. Tiny sound changes can have a large impact.
4. There are different Ma’di dialects, but they are not cut off from each other. One grammar describes two main dialect groupings, Northern and Southern, with varieties including ’Burulo, Lokai and Moyo/Ugandan Ma’di. The dialects are described as mutually intelligible.
5. Printed material in Ma’di has historically been quite limited. A grammar of the language describes printed Ma’di material as scarce, with religious publications, a bilingual paper called Ma’di Lelego, and Radio Uganda broadcasts among the examples mentioned.

About the Ma’di Language

Ma’di is most commonly spoken in Uganda and South Sudan. Its speakers often refer to it as Ma’di ti, or “Ma’di mouth,” giving the language a wonderfully human name and highlighting how speech is understood as something belonging to the people themselves. Because the language is spoken across a border area, it has developed in a naturally multilingual area. This means its speakers often oscillate between languages, depending on the environment they are in.

The spelling “Ma’di” itself reflects a sound feature of the language: the apostrophe marks an implosive consonant. That small mark is easy to overlook, but it is a useful reminder that this is a language with its own sound system, as well as a unique history and unusual linguistic character.
