the Garre Language
Garre, often called Af-Garre (and previously also known as Karre), is a Cushitic language used in the Horn of Africa. It is closely related to Somali, and chiefly associated with communities in Somalia and Kenya. It is identified as a stable language and, although precise figures are lacking, it is thought that Garre remains well established within the communities in which it is traditionally spoken.
The Horn of Africa is a linguistically intriguing area, with a remarkable density of languages and a long history of contact between them. Seen against this background, Garre is best understood as part of a wider network of closely related languages and varieties.
Five Interesting Facts about Garre:
- Among Somali clans, the Garre have a strong reputation for their impressive camels and are known as major contributors to the camel milk trade, including supply routes into cities like Mogadishu.
- Sometimes, you will notice Garre is referred to as “Af-Garre.” The prefix “Af-” simply means “language” in Somali, so the name literally means “the Garre language.”
- The spelling “Karre” appears frequently in earlier academic work, reflecting older transcription practices. This means, in effect, there are three language names to look out for: Garre, Af-Garre, and Karre.
- Garre has its own ISO 639-3 code, gex, which means it is recognized as a distinct language entry in international language-coding systems used for cataloguing, research, and digital language support.
- . It is thought that the word “Garre” comes from the Somali word “gar.” This term is the name of a special kind of rope used to tie camels to caravans, once again highlighting the importance of this desert animal within Garre society.
