Interesting Facts About the
Ga Language
Ga is a Kwa language, which is a branch of the Niger-Congo family. Although English is the only official language of Ghana, Ga is one of 11 government-sponsored languages, known as national languages. With around 700,000 – 800,000 speakers, it ranks as the fifth most spoken indigenous language in the country.
Five Interesting Facts about Ga:
- Ga has borrowed words from several languages, including Akan (Ghana’s most widely spoken indigenous language), but also Portuguese (due to its colonial past), as well as many from English. Many of these loanwords refer to aspects of modern daily life, such as schooling or technology.
- Ga might have started out as an oral language, but today, it is written down using the Latin alphabet. However, to denote its tonal qualities, its written form also includes some additional diacritics.
- The Ga people have lived in the southern region of Ghana for over a millennium. Originally, they farmed crops such as maize, but nowadays, trading goods and fishing play a vital role.
- Ga society has an interesting structure, with women holding many prominent roles, particularly when it comes to trading. In fact, the husband has no control over the wife’s money, and inheritance follows a matrilineal structure. Gender is not marked linguistically – nouns do not have a gender, unlike in many Niger-Congo languages.
- Ga has an unusual pronoun feature: It has two forms of “we,” one of which is inclusive (so it includes the listener), and another form that is exclusive, meaning the listener is not a part of the group. This feature is not found in any of the major European languages.
