Fijian Interpreting & Translation Services

Why details matter
It’s often the case that Fijian translation and interpreting requests begin with an urgent communication need. This might be a medical appointment, a legal conversation, a school meeting, an on-the-ground interaction, or written material that must be made accessible to the right audience.

At Capital Linguists, every one of our interpreters and translators has at least five years of professional experience, and every project goes through our ISO-backed QA process to help ensure accuracy, compliance, and cultural fluency.

We cover everything from carefully localized written content to consecutive, simultaneous, and remote simultaneous interpreting. We are able to do this thanks to our team of experts who understand the core regional and cultural differences that matter when liaising with Fijian-speaking communities, whether that’s in Fiji, the United States, or elsewhere in the world.

Fijian Remote and Telephone Interpreting

Our Fijian telephone and remote interpreting services help clients access professional interpreters when logistics, location, or timing means an on-site assignment is not feasible.

Interesting Facts About the Fijian Language

About Fijian Language

Fijian, known in the language itself as Vosa Vakaviti – literally, “language” or “speech in the Fijian way” – belongs to the Austronesian language family. You’ll also hear it referred to as the iTaukei language, reflecting its importance with the country’s Indigenous people. While Standard Fijian is based mainly on the Bauan variety, Fiji is home to a number of regional forms of the language, shaped by the islands and communities in which they are spoken.

Five Interesting Facts About Fijian:

01
Standard Fijian has respectful forms of addressing people. The plural second-person form “onī” may be used respectfully when speaking directly to a person of rank, rather than simply meaning “you all.”
02
Fijian grammar may distinguish between things associated with eating, drinking, or personal ownership. This is one of those details that shows why natural translation involves much more than matching individual words.
03
Historical accounts of early translation work describe problems when books written in one variety were sent to communities that spoke another. It is an old reminder of a very modern point: knowing the intended audience matters!
04
English uses “to be” in many different ways: “I am tired,” “there is rice,” “this is the house.” Fijian handles these ideas through different structures. The word “tiko,” for example, can be used to express that something exists or is available.
05
Fijian uses the Latin alphabet, but only 23 letters are used. Wondering which ones are left out? You’ll not see h, x, or z used in Fijian!

Frequently Asked Questions

Interpreting requirements vary considerably. A short remote appointment will not involve the same arrangements as an on-site event or a conference requiring equipment. The date, duration, location, format and subject matter will all help us work out what support is needed.

Not every document needs localization. A formal record or straightforward information sheet may simply need accurate translation. Localization is often useful when translating materials that are intended for outreach or a particular audience, or for content that contains many local references.

Short answer: Yes! Specialist material needs more than general language ability. Many of our Fijian linguists have specific sector experience, for example in a legal or medical setting. We’ll match each project with the Fijian translator whose experience is most closely aligned with the subject matter in question.

If you require over-the-phone or remote interpreting, we can arrange support very quickly. However, if you need an in-person interpreter to be present at a particular location, other factors such as travel and proximity will affect how quickly services can be arranged. In these instances, it’s always best to provide us with as much notice as possible.
