Chinese belongs to the Chinese branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. Spoken Chinese includes the dialects of Mandarin, Cantonese, Dungan, Gan, Hakka, Hunanese, Min, Shanghainese, Taiwanese, Teochew, Wu, Xiang, and Yue.

Mandarin is a variety of Chinese spoken mainly in China, Taiwan, and Singapore. Written Chinese is based on spoken Mandarin. Speakers all varieties of Chinese learn how to read and write in Mandarin. It is the main language of government, the media, and education in China and Taiwan, and one of the four official languages in Singapore. Mandarin is known as the common language, Beijing language, and Han language in China, the national language in Taiwan, and the Chinese language in Singapore and Malaysia.

Cantonese is spoken mainly in the southeast of China, particularly in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan. Cantonese is also the main language of business, the media, and government in Hong Kong and Macau. In Hong Kong, colloquial Cantonese is written with a combination of standard Chinese characters and over a thousand Cantonese characters. Spoken Cantonese greatly differs from Mandarin due to pronunciation, word choice, and grammar.

Other dialects of Chinese are also widely spoken. Shanghainese is a dialect of Wu spoken mostly in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Taiwanese is a dialect of Southern Min that is spoken in Taiwan.
