Afar Interpreting & Translation Services

WHY DETAILS MATTER

Afar interpreting and translation requests often come from situations where there is little room for confusion. A patient may need to describe symptoms, a client may need to understand a legal process, a family may need school information, or an organization may need written material translated for an Afar-speaking audience.

At Capital Linguists, we provide professional Afar translation services and afar interpreting services to help clients find the right Afar language support for each assignment. This means considering who needs to communicate with whom, as well as the setting itself. We look at whether the assignment requires spoken interpreting, written translation, document review, or content that could benefit from localization.

Our Afar interpreters are available for in-person, remote, and telephone work. We also support Afar document translation, review, localization, and afar translation services for legal, medical, educational, non-profit, corporate, and government materials.

Five Interesting Facts About Afar:

1. Afar is a verb-at-the-end language. Its basic word order is usually subject-object-verb, unlike English, and it means translation and interpretation need to consider the whole sentence rather than simply swapping a word at a time.

2. A lot of people are surprised to learn that Afar belongs to the same (large!) language family as Arabic, Hebrew, and Amharic. However, it is a part of the Cushitic side, which is why its grammatical profile is so different.

3. Afar has taken on various loanwords from other languages, both Arabic and Amharic, but also languages such as Italian and French. This reflects the region’s trade and religion, in addition to the complex colonial histories.

4. Modern Afar has its own alphabet tradition. Although the spoken language has a long history, the modern written system was only developed in the 1970s, by two Afar intellectuals known as Dimis and Redo. They came up with the Latin-based Afar alphabet, which is known as Qafar Feera and still in use today.
5. Afar has a tiny ISO code: “aa.” For language service providers, that little code can be useful in databases, interpreting systems, and language lists. Afar’s ISO 639-1 code is aa, while its ISO 639-2/3 code is aar.

About the Afar Language

A Cushitic language, Afar is also sometimes referred to as Afar Af, as well as Qafaraf. It is mostly spoken in the Horn of Africa, specifically the countries of Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. As Afar speakers are spread across several countries, the language exists alongside other major regional languages. This has a direct impact on the ways in which it is used and even on specific vocabulary choices.

That makes context especially important in interpreting and translation. A speaker’s country of origin, education, migration history, and everyday language use may all influence the terms they recognize or prefer. In legal, healthcare, and public service settings, that kind of detail can be very useful.
