Interesting Facts About
the Javanese Language

As its name suggests, Javanese is the primary language of the island of Java, in Indonesia. The most recent estimates put the number of Javanese native speakers in the 80-85 million range, making it one of the world’s most significant regional languages. In fact, it’s the largest language (by speaker numbers) without official status anywhere in the world. This is perhaps even more surprising when you consider that it ranks 10th for most-spoken languages worldwide. Its usage is not limited to Indonesia – migratory patterns mean you’ll also hear Javanese spoken in various other countries, from Suriname to Malaysia, Singapore, and the Netherlands.

Five Interesting Facts about Javanese:

  1. Java in Indonesia is the primary homeland of Javanese, where the language developed over more than a millennium. Its history shows evidence of this external influence, for example Sanskrit, Arabic, and later, contact with Dutch. Each of these historical interactions has left its own vocabulary and stylistic traces.
  2. Javanese belongs to the Austronesian language family and is related to many languages spoken across the Indonesian archipelago. Even so, it has developed along its own path. Centuries of local history have given it structural features that set it apart from nearby Malay and Indonesian.
  3. Rather than marking time, many Javanese verbs change according to social level: there are separate verb sets for casual and formal speech. Using a high-register verb in place of a low-er register form signals deference.
  4. Old Javanese, often called Kawi, is the classical literary language you might see in inscriptions or religious poetry. In fact, many modern ceremonial and high-register words derive directly from the Old Javanese terms preserved in those texts.
  5. Today, Javanese is most often written using the Latin alphabet, but it was originally written in its own script, called Aksara Jawa. This can still be seen as decorative lettering on monuments and on other cultural artifacts.
