Interesting Facts About the Mizo Language
Mizo (known as Lushai when the area was under colonial rule) is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken chiefly in Mizoram in northeast India, and by Mizo communities across the border in Myanmar and Bangladesh. In the state of Mizoram, it’s the main language used in schools, the media, and government. There are between 800,000 and 1 million speakers across the world and, while most live in the areas mentioned above, there are also significant diaspora in the United States. These include communities in Indianapolis, Tulsa, and the Washington, D.C. area.
Five Interesting Facts about Tedim Chin:
- Until the late 19th century, Mizo was exclusively an oral language. It wasn’t until the arrival of Welsh missionaries that a written form was developed.
- When the Welsh missionaries arrived in India, there was no written form at all, so they had to begin by learning the language from scratch. They adapted the Latin alphabet to accommodate the sounds particular to Mizo, before translating the Bible so it could be understood by the local people.
- Today, the language is known for its tonal system, its inclusive/exclusive “we,” and a dynamic cultural output ranging from literature to ecclesiastical songs, and pop music.
- As with all languages, Mizo evolves every day and rising English influences have led to a form of code-mixing somewhat affectionately known as “Minglish”!
- Mizo is also sometimes called Duhlian ṭawng, which simply means “the speech of the Duhlian people.” If you’re wondering who the Duhlian people are, they were one of the major Mizo clans – and it was their dialect that the Welsh missionaries first learned back in the 1890s.
