Certified Jamaican Patwa Interpreting & Translation Services

Why details matter

If you need to communicate effectively with Jamaican communities, Capital Linguists’ Jamaican Patwa experts are on hand, whether for spoken interpretation or as part of the growing demand for written translation.

Jamaican Patwa is an English-based creole language, but that doesn’t mean English speakers can understand it; in fact, despite many shared words, Jamaican Patwa has its own unique grammar, idioms, and syntax. Jamaican Patwa interpreters are therefore crucial in enabling effective communication between Jamaican communities and English speakers, whether in Jamaica itself, or among the significant Caribbean diaspora living abroad, in the US, UK, or Canada.

Capital Linguists provides Jamaican Patwa translation and interpreting services for both organizations and individuals who need language support they can rely on. We consider the intended reader or listener before we begin, allowing us to produce something that is not only clear and correct, but also appropriate. Our linguists have a minimum of five years’ professional experience, and Capital Linguists is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 17100.

Interesting Facts About the Jamaican Patwa Language

About Chatino Language
Jamaican Patwa, sometimes known as Jamaican Creole or even simply Patwa, is a creole language spoken on the Caribbean island of Jamaica. It is often easily recognizable, but this doesn’t mean it’s always fully understood. Many people assume that, because much of its vocabulary comes from English, it is easy for English speakers to follow. However, in reality it is a language in its own right, with a rhythm, pronunciation, and local idioms that are very much its own.

Five Interesting Facts About Jamaican Patwa:

01

It developed in colonial Jamaica and its earliest forms grew out of a need for communication between enslaved Africans and English-speaking colonizers. The language therefore emerged on the island’s many sugar plantations.

02

What began through language contact developed into a consistent system passed down through generations. Many people are surprised to learn that today’s Patwa, now considered an established language, does not mirror Standard English.

03

It has introduced words and expressions to audiences worldwide. Most of these have traveled thanks to Jamaica’s prominence in the world of music and popular culture, especially the reggae and dancehall scenes.

04

Jamaican Patwa has its own unique pronunciation that is quite different from English, despite having some shared vocabulary. For example, it includes distinctive features whereby the “th” sound becomes a harder “d” or “t” sound (such as “dis” and “dat,” rather than “this” and “that”). This is known as th-stopping.

05

While English was the base for Jamaican Patwa hundreds of years ago, today there are also many influences from other languages. These include West African languages such as Akan, Igbo, and Yoruba, as well as Spanish, Portuguese, and indigenous Caribbean languages such as Arawakan.

Where possible, yes. It makes sense that a series of appointments should use the same interpreter, for continuity purposes and also to allow a rapport to develop. Whenever availability allows, we’ll make sure this happens.

Yes. Capital Linguists’ translators and interpreters all have at least five years of professional experience. We also carefully select linguists whose background matches the assignment so that, where possible, you’ll work with a specialist in the subject matter as well as the language itself.
