Interesting Facts About the Tzotzil Language
Tzotzil is a Mexican language that belongs to the Mayan language family. Nowadays, it is a widely spoken indigenous language used in southern Mexico (notably in the state of Chiapas, which includes the town of San Cristobal de las Cases). Here, it is one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages and is used by close to half a million people.
Five Interesting Facts about Tzotzil:
- Despite its relatively large number of speakers, Tzotzil has been classified by UNESCO as a vulnerable language due to the enormous pressure it is under from Mexican Spanish.
- Tzotzil’s new status with UNESCO has had a positive result in terms of language preservation initiatives. These include the creation of bilingual education programs, and documents being produced in the Tzotzil language (as well as in Spanish).
- Numerals in Tzotzil are fascinating! It uses a vigesimal (base 20) counting system, which reflects its Mayan roots. This number system stems from our 20 fingers and toes and contrasts with the base-10 (decimal) system used in English and many other European languages.
- Tzotzil is renowned for its tricky pronunciation – especially for English speakers This is due to its consonant sounds that aren’t widely used in English, including glottalized stops and velar fricatives (like the “ch” in the Scottish word “loch” or the name of the composer, “Bach”).
- Tzotzil shares many grammatical and phonetic features with other Mayan languages, including Tzeltal, another prominent indigenous language widely spoken in the state of Chiapas.
