Hiligaynon is an Austronesian, Central Philippine (Bisayan) language spoken primarily in Western Visayas and parts of Negros and Mindanao. It’s a popular language, with millions of speakers, for whom it is either a first or second language. In much of Panay and Negros, Hiligaynon is the language of the famil table, the town fiesta, and even the local radio.

- Hiligaynon is a language with two names, and people commonly use both. The word “Hiligaynon” is the linguistic name, while “Ilonggo” often refers to the people and culture.
- Like many Philippine languages, Hiligaynon uses reduplication (repeating parts of words) to change meaning, such as to make things plural, mark intensity, or give a casual, affectionate tone.
