Interesting Facts About
Yucatec Maya
Yucatec Maya is one of Mexico’s 68 indigenous languages, with somewhere between 800,000 and 900,000 speakers. Like many indigenous languages, it has a strong oral tradition. Not only does this make precise data collection more complex, but it also means that translators and interpreters need to hone their skills regularly by engaging in conversations and discussions, rather than relying on written documents.
Although Spanish is Mexico’s de facto national language, Yucatec Maya has proven to be exceptionally resilient and continues to be passed down and preserved for generations to come.
Five Interesting Facts about Yucatec Maya:
- Yucatec Maya is one of a small number of languages to follow VSO word order – short for “verb-subject-object”. Most languages, including English, follow SVO (so the subject comes first in the sentence, followed by the verb, and finally the object) or SOV.
- Many words and phrases in Yucatec Maya are strongly connected to cultural ideas, which means there is often no direct equivalent in English. Translators must try to capture the meaning and find an alternative way to express the idea instead of translating it literally.
- Yucatec Maya is a direct reflection of the Yucatán Peninsula where it originated, as there are many words for the region's unique plants, animals, and other naturally occurring phenomena.
- Time has a particularly interesting form of expression in Yucatec Maya. Whereas most languages describe the timings of events using specific clock times or dates, in Yucatec Maya, time is perceived in terms of its connection to nature, such as the position of the sun, the moon, or harvest cycles.
- Yucatec Maya was originally written down using ancient Maya script. This complex and highly developed writing system uses individual pictures known as "glyphs." Each one can express either a morpheme or a syllable - or sometimes both! While modern Yucatec Maya is often recorded using the Latin alphabet, there is much interest in the ancient script, and efforts to preserve it are growing.
