Plautdietsch Interpreting & Translation Services

Why details matter
Mennonite Low German is used across communities that may be separated by thousands of miles. Naturally, that means not every speaker will use exactly the same words or written forms.

Before we begin a Plautdietsch project, we find out a little more about the intended audience. This gives us a better chance of producing something that is clear, useful, and appropriate rather than merely technically correct. Our linguists have at least five years of professional experience, and Capital Linguists is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 17100.

Plautdietsch Translation and Interpreting Services

What We Offer

Plautdietsch Interpreting for Conferences, Appointments and Public Meetings

A public meeting can involve several speakers, a packed agenda and very little spare time. Where appropriate, simultaneous Plautdietsch interpreting can help the event run without breaking up every contribution into separate sections.

Remote Plautdietsch Interpreting by Phone or Video

Video interpreting gives everyone the chance to see one another while they talk. That can be useful for longer meetings, particularly where documents are being discussed or where a more personal conversation is needed. Telephone and remote interpreting can easily be arranged with a moment’s notice. It requires minimal equipment, enabling communication to take place between speakers in different locations.

Plautdietsch Translation for Documents and Public Information

A Plautdietsch translation needs to make sense to the people reading it. A school letter, medical leaflet and legal document will not all need the same approach. At Capital Linguists, we work hard to preserve the original tone and meaning, while also considering the nature of the document in question.

Plautdietsch Localization

Sometimes, content needs more than translation and can benefit from localization, too. This additional service makes sure the result matches the target audience’s precise needs and expectations, using the right tone, vocabulary, and even formatting. Our localization work takes account of where the content will appear, who it is meant to reach, and how the language is used in that community.

Interesting Facts About the Plautdietsch Language

About Chatino Language
Plautdietsch, which is sometimes referred to as Mennonite Low German, began life in the Vistula Delta, Royal Prussia, in what is now northern Poland, during the 16th and 17th centuries. Mennonites from the Netherlands and nearby areas settled there, and the language emerged as Dutch speakers interacted with East Low German speakers. The result was Plautdietsch.
In some ways, its story continued in a similar vein. Rather than staying in one place, migration patterns took Plautdietsch from Europe to Russia and Ukraine, before heading even further to Canada, Mexico, Paraguay, Bolivia and other parts of the Americas. The language itself bears traces of this extensive movement, and someone who speaks Plautdietsch in Paraguay may bear traces of Spanish influence, while speakers in Canada may be more influenced by English.
That multilingual background matters. It can affect which words feel familiar, how written information is received and whether a more straightforward or more explanatory style will work best.

Five Interesting Facts About Plautdietsch:

01
Although Plautdietsch contains many words that are related to German, the pronunciation makes them harder to recognize. In Plautdietsch, many consonants are “palatalized”– in other words, the sound is produced with the tongue raised toward the palate. This creates a very different sound from their equivalent in Standard German.
02
The first major Mennonite settlement in southern Russia became known as the Old Colony, or Chortitsa. A later settlement was called the New Colony, or Molochna. Those two settlements helped produce two well-known varieties of Plautdietsch.
03
Plautdietsch also borrowed words from Russian, but they did not always remain the same. Often, speakers changed verb endings so that the new words fitted naturally into Plautdietsch grammar.
04
As well as changing verb endings, sometimes meanings evolved, too. For instance, in some Siberian varieties of Plautdietsch, the word borrowed from Russian for “machine” could also mean “car.”
05
In the very earliest colonies, many church services were held in Plautdietsch, because the preachers were laymen who could not speak the High German usually used to deliver formal sermons. High German later became more important in church life, especially once trained ministers arrived and the Luther Bible replaced the older Dutch Bible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Often, no. The best thing to do is to send a clear scan or photo of the document first. We will check whether the writing is readable and whether the document needs transcription before translation can begin.

We treat confidentiality as part of every project. Our linguists work under confidentiality requirements, and we use secure project-management processes when handling personal, healthcare, legal, education, and business information.

Yes, the interpreter does not have to stay for the whole appointment if their support is only needed at certain points. We will just need to know when the interpreter is expected to join and how long that part is likely to take.

Definitely! This can be very helpful and will allow the linguist assigned to your project to have a more detailed idea of the type of content that will be discussed. If previous meetings on the same subject have taken place, notes or information about these can also help.
