Interesting Facts About the West African Pidgin English

About West African Pidgin English

West Africa is home to hundreds of languages, and Pidgin often helps bridge the gaps between them. It is better understood as a group of related English-based varieties than as one language used uniformly everywhere. West Africans can then communicate in Pidgin, regardless of their mother tongue. This means there are, of course, many varieties, depending on where it is spoken, and by whom.

You’ll mostly hear it used in countries such as Nigeria, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Ghana, The Gambia, and Equatorial Guinea, and the latest estimates put speaker numbers at somewhere in the region of 120-140 million.

Five Interesting Facts About West African Pidgin English:

01
Ghana’s “Student Pidgin” was not really needed to overcome a language barrier. The secondary-school and university students who used it could usually communicate in Standard English. Pidgin served another purpose: it marked friendship, informality, and membership of the group. In other words, the choice of language was as much about belonging as being understood.
02

In Ghanaian Pidgin, a small change in the way a vowel is pronounced can completely alter the word. One such example is “hapi,” which means “happy,” and a nasalized form of the same word meaning “happen.” To an English speaker, they may look almost identical on the page, but they do not sound identical to someone familiar with the variety.

03

A headache can be described as your head “knocking” you. It is a good example of why a word-for-word translation can miss the way an idea is naturally pictured and expressed in another language.

04

The Nigerian Pidgin expression for toe can be understood as “finger for leg.” The word “finga” refers to a finger, while “finga for leg” distinguishes the digits on the foot. English once did something rather similar – the word “toe” comes from an older word connected with fingers!

05

Repeating a verb in Nigerian Pidgin can add information, rather than simply sounding emphatic. Repetition may show that something happens several times, or with greater intensity. It’s also interesting that a change in tone can suggest how the repeated action is happening irregularly or in a scattered fashion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Consecutive interpreting is often the best fit for less formal situations where there are just a handful of participants. It allows everyone to speak naturally and at their usual pace.

Definitely! Although the different varieties overlap to a certain extent, they are by no means identical and selecting the right one is important for clarity. Although the choice usually comes down to where your audience is based, sometimes it’s less straightforward and you might need to reach people who are spread across multiple countries. In that situation, we can advise as to which variety is most appropriate.

Yes. Our team regularly works with audio materials, whether that’s for subtitling or voiceover work. Just send us the audio or video file along with a note explaining what the finished material will be used for. We can produce a time-coded transcript, translate the spoken content, create subtitles, and even prepare a voiceover-ready script with timings.

That is usually the aim. The goal of a professional translator is to create something that sounds completely natural to a Pidgin speaker, while keeping the original meaning and purpose intact.
