Shilluk Interpreting & Translation Services

— WHY DETAILS MATTER

Shilluk language requests often involve sensitive, real-world communication: a patient explaining a health concern, a parent speaking with a school, an attorney meeting with a client, or an agency preparing public information for a community audience. Shilluk, also known by names including Dhøg Cøllø and Chollo, is closely tied to Shilluk communities in South Sudan and belongs to the Nilotic language family.

At Capital Linguists, we provide ISO-backed Shilluk interpreting and translation services for a range of sectors including legal, healthcare, educational, nonprofit, corporate, and government settings. We take time to understand who the audience is, how the language is being identified, and what type of support the assignment requires.

As a leading, ISO-certified translation agency, we provide everything from carefully tailored written translations to consecutive and remote simultaneous interpreting – always with an awareness of the linguistic and cultural detail that can make a real difference.

Five Interesting Facts About Shilluk:

1. Shilluk is written with a Latin-based alphabet, introduced by missionaries at the start of the 20th century. Although its letters may look familiar, Shilluk’s spelling system represents sounds, tones and vowel contrasts that are anything but recognizable to most English speakers.
2. Shilluk has a royal history. The Shilluk were historically united under a divine king known as the reth, chosen from the sons of previous kings.
3. The Shilluk Kingdom traces its royal story back to Nyikang. Remembered as a founding culture hero, Nyikang has strong connections with Shilluk royal identity.
4. In Shilluk, vowel length can work on three levels, known as short, long, and overlong. This typologically unusual feature is very interesting to linguists.
5. Making Shilluk nouns plural is not straightforward. The language has a wide range of noun-number patterns, which adds yet another layer to its already complex sound and grammar system.

About the Shilluk Language

Shilluk, or Chollo, is a language of South Sudan with deep roots along the White Nile. It is spoken mainly in Upper Nile State, where Shilluk communities have long been part of the region’s river-based culture.

There are thought to be several hundred thousand Shilluk speakers, most of whom live in South Sudan. There are some smaller communities located along the Sudanese border of South Sudan and very small refugee populations in the United States.

Shilluk is a Nilo-Saharan language, related to other Nilotic languages and closely related to Dholuo. Like many African languages, it is tonal and meaning can be changed by the way it is pronounced.
