Interesting Facts About the
Nahuatl Language
Nahuatl isn’t single uniform tongue but a family of related varities spoken across central Mexico. People sometimes call it Náhuatl or simply Mexicano in older texts, and spellings change depending on the region. Those differences come from local speech patterns, historic influences and the way the language has been written down over time. Today, somewhere in the region of one to two million people still speak Nahuatl in its many forms.
Five Interesting Facts about Nahuatl:
- Nahuatl was the language of the Aztec (Mexica) heartlands centuries ago, but it’s still spoken today. It’s anything but a museum language – there are many unique varieties spoken across central Mexico.
- Although estimates vary considerably, it is thought that somewhere between one and two million people speak Nahuatl today, depending on how you count dialects and levels of fluency.
- “Nahuatl” covers a group of regional varieties (including Huasteca, Guerrero, and Puebla). Some are quite different from one another, to the extent that they aren’t mutually intelligible.
- Nahuatl may be labeled a minority language, yet its influence is far greater than that suggests: many familiar Spanish words can be traced straight back to Nahuatl origins. Chocolate, tomato, coyote, and avocado all entered Spanish – and later English – thanks to Nahuatl.
- 5. Some of the sounds used in Nahuatl, such as the glottal stop or words ending in “tl,” don’t exist in English, which can make it tricky to pronounce at first. That’s why storytelling and preserving local sayings help to keep it alive.
