Interesting Facts About the
Anuak Language
Anuak is a Nilotic language spoken in western parts of Ethiopia, as well as in South Sudan. There are many names for Anuak, including Anyuakm Anywa, Jambo, Moojanga, and Nuro. These various names stem from diverse linguistic, historical, and colonial influences, in addition to pronunciation and orthographical differences. Estimates vary considerably as to the number of Anuak speakers, but the consensus is that there are somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000.
Five Interesting Facts about Anuak:
- The longevity of Anuak is under threat from the rising popularity of Amharic, especially in Ethiopia. Young people in regions traditionally dominated by Anuak speakers (such as Gambella) are increasingly drawn to Amharic due to its prevalence in the world of education.
- Proverbs play an important role in the Anuak language, as well as in its society overall. Some reflect wider values underpinning the Anuak community, such as: “A person without a family is like a bird without a nest.” This highlights the importance of family and the role of the wider community.
- As is common with Nilotic languages, Anuak is a tonal language. This means the way in which a word is pronounced, whether with a high, mid, or low tone, can completely transform its meaning.
- While tone can be expressed in the language’s spoken form, written Anuak can sometimes present the reader with some ambiguities to tackle! In written Anuak, tone is not always indicated, leaving readers the task of making a judgment based on the context. Some scholars, however, include diacritic marks to show tone.
- Anuak doesn’t have the same approach to plurals as many languages. While in English we add an “s” (or “es”) to a word in order to show more than one, in Anuak, plurality is usually shown through the context itself, rather than having a strict, rule-based plural form.
