My passion for interpreting began during my time as a student at the Shanghai International Studies University in China. What languages do you translate between?
While I completed my PhD in Spain and am fluent in reading and writing Spanish, as well as proficient in Portuguese—having embraced Portugal as my second home—my professional expertise is dedicated exclusively to interpreting and translating between Mandarin Chinese and English. Do you prefer to provide simultaneous or consecutive interpretation? Why?
Simultaneous interpreting is undeniably more time-efficient and facilitates smoother communication compared to consecutive interpreting. However, it necessitates the use of specialized audio-visual equipment to ensure high-quality interpretation. Unfortunately, clients with limited budgets often forgo this equipment, which can compromise the overall quality of the interpretation. In such situations, I prefer consecutive interpreting, as it allows me to deliver more accurate and faithful communication without relying on additional resources.
What are one or two large projects you particularly enjoyed?
Confidentiality is paramount to my clients, so I only share details about publicly known projects. Recently, I had the privilege of interpreting for high-profile cultural events hosted by Moutai Spirits, China’s national liquor, in San Francisco. This opportunity allowed me to engage with prominent California statesmen and discuss the unique qualities that make Moutai exceptional. The liquor undergoes a complex fermentation process involving 1,964 aromatic compounds and microorganisms—a process that is truly inimitable. The experience was further enriched by the delightful addition of Moutai-shaped pastries, which served as the perfect finishing touch to the event.
What is your favorite thing about being an interpreter?
One of my favorite aspects of being a Mandarin interpreter is the unparalleled flexibility it offers, a quality rarely found in other professions. Since the onset of COVID-19, the rise of remote interpreting through platforms like Zoom and other video conferencing systems has revolutionized the field. This shift has allowed me to work seamlessly from anywhere in the world, granting me the freedom to travel, explore diverse cultures, and continuously broaden my horizons while pursuing a career I am passionate about.
How do you handle the stress of the work?
Maintaining a calm and balanced mindset is essential for managing the demands of my work. Regular physical exercise plays a crucial role in helping me stay grounded and alleviate stress. Additionally, spending time with my alpacas and miniature horses provides a wonderful escape; their playful and gentle nature allows me to momentarily set aside any work-related concerns and recharge both mentally and emotionally. This combination of mindfulness, activity, and connection with animals creates a harmonious way to handle the challenges of my profession.
